Capable Communities Website Privacy Policy

Michigan State University’s Office of University Outreach & Engagement is committed to protecting the privacy of the users of the Capable Communities website. This website has been created in accordance with the MSU Acceptable Use Policy for Computing and Networks (http://www.msu.edu/aup/). The following policy has been created to insure that the website can be a trusted source for online information about the scholarship and practice of improving the lives of children, families, and communities. Notice

When you are visiting the Capable Communities website, information about your browser type1 and Internet Protocol (IP) address2 are automatically recorded by our server. Currently, no cookies3 are used on this website. Except for what you voluntarily submit to us, we do not collect any personally identifiable information.

Any personally identifiable information that you provide us through the “Contact Us” webpage will only be used to respond to you. This information will be retained, but will not be provided to any other organizations or companies.

Personally identifiable information that you provide us through the “E-mail List” webpage will only be used to identify users who have indicated that they wish to be added to an e-mail list that will periodically provide information about the Capable Communities website and news about the subject areas the website addresses. This information will be retained, but will not be provided to any other organizations or companies.

Although the “User Profile” webpage requests none, any personally identifiable information that you submit through it will only be used to identify the interests and backgrounds of users in order to inform our decisions about how to increase awareness about the website users with similar interests and backgrounds. This information will be retained, but will not be provided to any other organizations or companies.

Choice

On any page that asks you to submit personally identifiable information, you will be asked to affirmatively give consent to allow us to use the information. You do have the right to revoke your consent at any time. If you revoke your consent, all information that we have regarding you will be erased within one month. If you wish to revoke your consent, send an e-mail to outreach@msu.edu.

Personally Identifiable Information

We consider any information that could reasonably be used to identify you personally as personally identifiable information. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Your name
  • Your address
  • Your e-mail address
  • Any combination of data that could be used to identify you such as your birthdate, your zip code, and your gender.

Under no circumstances will we ask you to provide financial or sensitive personal information. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Your Social Security number
  • Your password(s)
  • Bank account information
  • Credit card information
  • Any information that you would be embarrassed about if someone else found out about it.

Court Proceedings

We could be required by court orders or other laws to divulge information about you to law enforcement authorities, to government agencies, or to the court.

Access

If you would like access to the information that you have provided to us, e-mail outreach@msu.edu with your name and address and this information will be sent to you. If you wish to make any corrections or deletions, e-mail outreach@msu.edu with these.

Security

Any transmission that you make on the Internet is not secure. However, since we do not collect financial or sensitive personal information we only provide the security necessary to maintain our website. Personally identifiable information will not be disclosed to third parties unless we are required to do so by law.

Changes

We will post any substantial changes in this privacy policy at least 30 days prior to the change taking effect. Any information collected under this current policy will remain bound by the terms of this privacy policy. After the changes take effect, all new information collected, if any, will be subject to the revised privacy policy.

The Capable Communities website contains hyperlinks to other websites that have their own privacy policies and data collection practices. Please consult each website’s privacy policy for further information. The Michigan State University Office of University Outreach & Engagement is not responsible for the actions of such third parties.
